The whole story
Morning with the Cicadas
You said it was the end, and it was. You also said, years back, we were bound together, time before time, our souls interwoven, invincible. Remember when you said that? Remember the sun unweaving itself into a pile of orange, as the cicadas screeched, bursting out of their skins, skins we would find the next morning, clung to the bark of trees knifed into by lovers long before us, or maybe hours before us, lovers trying to hold on to each other when skins are smooth, unscarred, and promises come easily, before time brings circumstances that try our wills, turning quiet slights and offhand comments into endings, until these lovers burst out of their skin, leaving a trail of airy shapes down to where we swore we wouldn't be like those others with their initials carved into trees.
